Take a step back in time! Maxwells is the place to enjoy the magic of an old-fashioned candy shoppe. Our store is located right off the village green, within walking distance of Colgate University, the Colgate Inn, and any of the quaint shops or restaurants in town.

We are known for our high quality products and friendly service. Our staff of experts is always ready to go above and beyond to serve you; whether its treating you to our vintage ice cream parlor experience or recommending gourmet chocolates for your special someone, they are here to help! 

 

Come in and delight your senses with our renowned chocolate selection displayed in our classic candy-store cases. Pick out just one gourmet chocolate to try or a whole box. We feature pre-made chocolate collection boxes as well as the ability to design your own. About 30% of our chocolates are made on premises. At Maxwells, we specifically create small batches of our hand dipped, chocolatey creations to ensure freshness and high quality. The rest of the chocolates in our case come from a fourth generation candy company called Ashers in PA or a small truffle maker in Burlington, VT. We are proud to offer these premium confections to all our customers.

We also have a large assortment of wrapped and loose nostalgic bulk candy. Delights such as chocolate covered raisins, swedish fish, fruit slices, Charleston Chews, smarties, candy buttons, and chocolate bridge mix will bring back fond memories of childhood. Never had the experience of filling a bag full of "penny" candy? Create new memories and special moments at Maxwells with the whole family—young and young-at-heart alike!

Besides indulging in our candy, it is always a delightful pastime savoring a frozen treat at our ice cream bar. We offer a wide selection of classic flavors with a few trendy choices. Of course, we serve ice cream cones and sundaes, but we also go far beyond the basics. Our premium, double scoop sundaes include all of fixings, plus a gourmet truffle or chocolate from our case; they are truly fit for a king or queen! In the mood for a milkshake? Our shakes are famous! Local faves are "The Ultimate" (chocolate, cookie dough, and cookies-'n'-cream ice-cream) and "The Half Moon (a cookies-'n'-cream creation). We even have the "Open 'Gate Shake" where you can create your own speciality milkshake with up to 3 different ice cream flavors. Be brave and daring: create an unforgettable combination which may become your new favorite shake! 

 

Beginning in October of 2018 we proudly began serving Gilligan’s homemade ice cream , produced in nearby Sherburne. In addition to all the flavors you’ve come to know and love at Maxwells, we introduced Raider Passion - a Colgate University custom flavor and favorite among students made with cake batter ice cream, pieces of red velvet cake, and brownies! Cookie Monster is also a new favorite - a chocolate ice cream with cookie dough and oreo cookie pieces. Vegan and fresh fruit sorbets are also on the menu. And finally… have you heard all the craze about alcoholic ice creams? Gilligan’s has us covered with five flavors including Kahlua & Baileys, Vanilla Bourbon, and Double Buzz (coffee and a dark ale) just to name a few!  (You must be 21 and have proper ID to enjoy these options.)

 

While visiting Maxwells, be sure admire our collection of nostalgic decorations and memorabilia from the '40s, '50s, and '60s. We have vintage candy boxes, Coke signs, toys and more to trigger memories of days gone by! Customers often exclaim: "I remember playing with that toy when I was a kid" or "Wow, I haven't thought of Root Beer Barrels in years." It is our pleasure to be a part of your rediscovery of the past and joy of retreating back to a simpler time.
